ASCAP Aims To Implement License Fees For Ringtones

Today I came across this article when browsing through TechCrunch and I frankly thought it was something worth-sharing with everybody.

For those of you too lazy to click on the link and read the full story, it explains that the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP) are insisting that cellphone ringtones should be deemed as public performances of music. Consequently, these “performances” should be accompanied by the paying of a license by the “public”. Continue reading

100 Posts!

This week MusicKO became 100 posts old, and to commemorate it I am reviewing my favorite album ever: Quadrophenia, by The Who.

I would like to thank all the people who visit MusicKO regularly and all those who have started linking back to it.

If there is anything that you would like me to cover or a feature you would like to see please let me know in the comments!

See you around!

Kanye West Interrupted Taylor Swift And The Social Web Went Off

Kanye West’s interruption of Taylor’s Swift acceptance speech is one of the viral pieces of content right now. MTV has managed to keep it off YouTube, but a relevant search produces enough remixes and video reactions to keep you watching for hours on end. One of the finest:

This is not the first time Kanye’s big mouth blazes off. The remark of him that caused the biggest controversy was the one about President Bush in the aftermath of Katrina:

That video alone has had over 6 million views ever since it was posted online. Note the expression of co-host Mike Myers at the end! Continue reading

Month In Review – August 2009

Looking back now I must admit I am very happy and reasonably optimistic ever since I officially launched MusicKO at the beginning of August.

Two events of note were being featured on Killer Startups and Startup Meme. My regards to Roger and Sardar respectively for their honest reviews.

Some of the post I wrote elicited a very positive response and these posts in particular are among the most popular so far:

Placebo – Once More With Feeling

The Clash (the introduction and the reviews of their debut album)

The Sex Pistols (again, the introduction and the review of their one “true” release)

Eddie Rabbit: Greatest Hits

And the post that has been more popular so far:

The Allman Brothers Band: A Decade Of Music

Les Paul Passes Away At Age 94

Mr. Les Paul

Mr. Les Paul

As you know, earlier today (Thursday the 13th of August, 2009) Mr. Les Paul passed away. He was the creator of the solid body electric guitar, no less, and Gibson even created a model which was named after him. It was the one that musicians like Jimmy Page and Pete Townshend popularized.

Mr. Les Paul was also responsible for developing the multitracking system which is so commonplace in music nowadays. Indeed, he was inducted into the National Inventors Hall Of Fame in 2005 as well as being an Honorary Member of the Audio Engineering Society. Continue reading

Featured On Startup Meme!

Another reason to take the champagne off the ice (well, sort of). MusicKO was featured on Startup Meme. This is the original post:

http://startupmeme.com/musicko-the-encyclopedia-to-be-of-music-reviews/

I like the basic premise of the post – MusicKO as the eventual definitive encyclopedia of music reviews. That is a bit lofty, isn’t it? If I manage to create a spot where music lovers can interact and learn more things about their favorite performers I will be more than happy. And you know, now I am more enthusiastic than ever – these last days have been very good in terms of traffic, big thanks to all the people who have spread the word either by writing about MusicKO or by retweeting these articles. Featured On Killer Startups!

Quite a surprise, MusicKO was featured on Killer Startups today. The review was a very favorable one, the guy who wrote it obviously loves music as much as we do around here.

This is the link:

The reviewer also makes some valid points, I am very grateful for that.

There is also a box for you to vote for MusicKO, don’t forget to do that after reading the review!

Catch you later,
